The mind is a powerful stuff. If you chew food while eating, count while chewing or try to chew 50 times for instance, you will notice food will slowly go down your gut before reaching the count of 50. For some it maybe after 10 chews or maybe more depending on the habitual eating pattern stored in the mind. This is just to say that how the mind is in control of everything that happens to us.
First, let’s understand what is meant by conscious and subconscious minds. The part of your brain that you are aware of is your conscious mind. On the flip side, the part of your mind you are unaware of is your subconscious mind. It is that simple, OK maybe not, let’s try to explain further.
Our mind has two parts. The conscious mind and the subconscious mind. We are constantly aware of our conscious mind. We make decisions, we analyze situations, and we jump to conclusions with our conscious mind. It is very easy to feel that our conscious mind is all that there is, but scientists say the conscious mind is only about 10% of our thinking capacity. So where is the other 90% ?
Locked away in your subconscious mind. Everything you have ever known or experienced is in your subconscious mind. Every thought, every word, every song, every harsh and angry word expressed, every loving act performed. Your subconscious is a vast storehouse of all your past experience, and has overwhelming influence on all your actions and reactions. Most of us are not aware of the subconscious or its tremendous power to bring success and happiness into our lives.
(Excerpt from “Life One-0-One: Find your Purpose” by Vince DaCosta.)
The conscious mind, is the surface self, the voluntary mind, the objective mind or the rational mind. The Conscious mind is that part that we use when we brush our teeth.
The subconscious mind is the deep self, the involuntary mind, the subjective mind or the irrational mind. Our subjective mind is trained by every day events. Our belief system is rooted in the subconscious mind.
Our body is basically is a hardware, the mind is the operating system [like windows] and the beliefs are the software than run everyday, bringing us our present reality. These beliefs right there are formed from habits or repetitive actions. These are slowly and quietly converted into belief systems and run as software on the mind. Let’s take an example: You learn to drive, you learn it consciously and but then with repetition you learn how to shift gears each time your vehicle stops. Once you’ve repeated this action, it is learned and passed to the subconscious mind. Then you drive subconsciously which means that while you get pissed off about the traffic, your subconscious mind, using its vast neural network guides the car, avoids trucks, keeps pace with traffic and gets you home as fast as possible.
Your subconscious mind does not have the ability to argue or dispute what it is told. If you give wrong information, it will accept it as true. It will then work to make that information correct. It will bring your suggestions, even those that were false, to pass as conditions, experiences, and events.
Everything that has happened to you happened because of thoughts impressed on your subconscious mind through belief. If you have communicated wrong or distorted concepts to your subconscious mind, it is of the most urgent importance to correct them. The sure way to do this is by repeatedly giving your conscious mind constructive, harmonious thoughts. As these are frequently repeated, your subconscious mind accepts them. In this way, you can form new, healthier habits of thought and life, for your subconscious mind is the seat of habit.
The habitual thinking of your conscious mind establishes deep grooves in your subconscious mind. If your habitual thoughts are harmonious, peaceful, and constructive, your subconscious mind will respond by creating harmony, peace and constructive conditions.
(excerpt from “The Power of your Subconscious Mind” by Joseph Murphy, Ph.D., D.D.)
Understanding the subconscious mind requires an overview of the principal pattern recognition processes operating in the nervous system. Beneath your awareness, neural drives remember and recognize patterns and act with logical precision. Those drives support your speech. They respond to your feelings, organize an idea, find the right words, arrange them in order, check grammar and operate your vocal chords. You are only conscious of the final outcome.
Most of the things you do are outputs of your subconscious drives. Even the emotional turmoil you experience is caused by internal drives triggered by emotions. Effective mind control depends on an understanding of the major neural drives within your subconscious mind.
Your conscious actions eventually become subconscious habits. The basal ganglia, a brain organ, is believed to “automate thinking and acting, turning focally conscious activities into quick, reliable, unthinking habit.”
The more you understand the subconscious mind, the better you become in understanding yourself. Following are some important characteristics of the subconscious mind that will help you increase your understanding of it.

|Body and Behavior|
1) The subconscious mind thinks in the form of images
Your subconscious mind stores all your memories and experiences in the form of images and symbols. That’s why during dreams (which are nothing but thoughts of the subconscious mind) all we see are pictures and symbols.
2) It’s always active
During the day, both the conscious and the subconscious mind are active, though the latter works in the background. When you are asleep, your conscious mind is temporarily switched off and the activity of the subconscious mind manifests itself in the form of dreams. At the same time your subconscious mind is also alert to any external stimuli, such as the sound of an alarm clock.
3) It communicates with you via emotions
Emotions are the language of the subconscious mind. When you are awake, you can consciously notice the emotional changes that you experience and hence understand what the subconscious mind is trying to tell you. But when you are asleep and your conscious mind isn’t active, you lose this ability and the subconscious mind is forced to convey you its messages (emotions) via dreams.
4) It controls your bodily functions
Your bodily and metabolic functions like breathing, digestion, blood circulation, etc. are all controlled by the subconscious mind so that you don’t have to consciously bother about them. If you focus on your breathing right now. Since the time you started reading this post, you were breathing but your conscious attention was on reading this post. It was your subconscious mind that was controlling your breathing.
Currently, you are breathing consciously because I told you to pay attention to your breathing. As soon as you shift your attention back to reading the rest of this post, your subconscious mind will again take over the breathing activity.
5) Every image is real to the subconscious mind
Everything that you see, in real life or on a screen, imagine or dream is considered real by the subconscious mind. If you happen to see a ghost in your room at night, you will no doubt become terrified. But you’ll also be terrified if you just imagine a ghost, see it in a movie or see it in a nightmare.
6) It cannot process negative words/ non-judgmental
If I tell you “Don’t think of a white elephant” what do you do? Of course, you think of a white elephant. Its image flashes across your mind, even if for a millisecond. Negative commands like “don’t” are not processed by the subconscious mind, which means that it is non-judgmental.
7) It ensures your survival and maintains your well-being
Your subconscious mind is like a friend or a guide that not only wants to ensure your survival but also wants you stay happy and healthy. Almost all the emotions are designed to either protect you from danger (perceived or real) or move you towards happiness and well-being.
8) The Subconscious mind controls your habits
Habits govern most of our daily life activities. Habits are nothing but behavioral patterns stored in our subconscious mind. Everything that you habitually do, say or think today, started off as a single action or thought which was repeated often enough until it was passed down to your subconscious mind where it became a habit. All habits reside at the level of your subconscious mind where you no longer have to consciously think about them. Therefore, changing habits permanent must involve programming and re-programming your unwanted negative beliefs at the subconscious level.
9) The Subconscious mind is non-linear.
Time factor does not exist for the subconscious mind, an incident produced 10 or 20 years ago will still be as if it happens in the present moment. The conscious mind deals with the past, the present and the future whereas the sub conscious mind lives in the present moment.
“Your beliefs become your thoughts
Your thoughts become your words
Your words become your actions
Your actions become your habits
Your habits become your values
Your values become your destiny.”
Now, all the above theories are fine, not that we understand the concepts it is important to realize that we have a powerhouse inside the mind. The main point to remember is once the subconscious mind accepts an idea, it begins to execute it. It is an interesting and subtle truth that the law of the subconscious mind works for good and bad ideas alike. This law, when applied in a negative way, is the cause of failure, frustration, and unhappiness. However, when your habitual thinking is harmonious and constructive, you experience perfect health, success, and prosperity. Peace of mind and a healthy body are inevitable when you begin to think and feel in the right way. Whatever you claim mentally and feel as true, your subconscious mind will accept and bring forth into your experience. The only thing necessary for you to do is to get your subconscious mind to accept your idea, and the law of your own subconscious mind will bring forth the health, peace, or the position you desire. You give the command or decree, and your subconscious will faithfully reproduce the idea impressed upon it. The law of your mind is this: You will get a reaction or response from your subconscious mind according to the nature of the thought or idea you hold in your conscious mind.
Psychologists and psychiatrists point out that when thoughts are conveyed to your subconscious mind, impressions are made in the brain cells. As soon as your subconscious accepts any idea, it proceeds to put it into effect immediately. It works by association of ideas and uses every bit of knowledge that you have gathered in your lifetime to bring about its purpose. It draws on the infinite power, energy, and wisdom within you. It lines up all the laws of nature to get its way. Sometimes it seems to bring about an immediate solution to your difficulties, but at other times it may take days, weeks, or longer.
Your subconscious mind accepts what is impressed upon it or what you consciously believe. It does not reason things out like your conscious mind, and it does not argue with you controversially. Your subconscious mind is like the soil, which accepts any kind of seed, good or bad. Your thoughts are active and might be likened unto seeds. Negative, destructive thoughts continue to work negatively in your subconscious mind, and in due time will come forth into outer experience which corresponds with them. Remember, your subconscious mind does not engage in proving whether your thoughts are good or bad, true or false, [irrational mind] but it responds according to the nature of your thoughts or suggestions. For example, if you consciously assume something as true, even though it may be false, your subconscious mind will accept it as true and proceed to bring about results, which must necessarily follow, because you consciously assumed it to be true.
Your subconscious mind cannot argue controversially. Hence, if you give it wrong suggestions, it will accept them as true and will proceed to bring them to pass as conditions, experiences, and events. All things that have happened to you are based on thoughts impressed on your subconscious mind through belief. If you have conveyed erroneous concepts to your subconscious mind, the sure method of overcoming them is by the repetition of constructive, harmonious thoughts frequently repeated which your subconscious mind accepts, thus forming new and healthy habits of thought and life, for your subconscious mind is the seat of habit. The habitual thinking of your conscious mind establishes deep grooves in your subconscious mind. This is very favorable for you if your habitual thoughts are harmonious, peaceful, and constructive. If you have indulged in fear, worry, and other destructive forms of thinking, the remedy is to recognize the omnipotence of your subconscious mind and decree freedom, happiness, and perfect health. Your subconscious mind, being creative and one with your divine source, will proceed to create the freedom and happiness, which you have earnestly decreed.
Whatever The Mind Can Conceive And Believe, It Can Achieve. -Napoleon Hill
Subconscious Mind in action
If you want to loose weight, and you have this belief in your sub conscious mind: “I put on weight easily”. Then you can go to any gym you want to do any diet, you will loose it, but put it back straight after. The subconscious mind will bring you all situations, temptations, food cravings that will compel you to eat. [Read more here]
The conscious mind is like the navigator or captain at the bridge of a ship. He directs the ship and signals orders to men in the engine room, who in turn control all the boilers, instruments, gauges, etc. The men in the engine room do not know where they are going; they follow orders. They would go on the rocks if the man on the bridge issued faulty or wrong instructions based on his findings with the compass.
The men in the engine room obey him because he is in charge and issues orders, which are automatically obeyed. Members of the crew do not talk back to the captain; they simply carry out orders. The captain is the master of his ship, and his decrees are carried out. Likewise, your conscious mind is the captain and the master of your ship, which represents your body, environment, and all your affairs. Your subconscious mind takes the orders you give it based upon what your conscious mind believes and accepts as true.
“I can’t have a boyfriend,” then your subconscious mind takes you at your word and sees to it that you will not be in a position to purchase what you want. As long as you persist in saying, “I can’t afford that car, that trip to Europe, that home, etc.” you can rest assured that your subconscious mind will follow your orders, and you will go through life experiencing the lack of all these things.
A beautiful young university student looked at an attractive and rather expensive traveling bag in a store window. She was going home to Buffalo, New York, for the holidays. She was about to say, “I can’t afford that bag,” when she recalled something she had heard at one of my lectures which was, “Never finish a negative statement; reverse it immediately, and wonders will happen in your life.” She said, “That bag is mine. It is for sale. I accept it mentally, and my subconscious sees to it that I receive it.” At eight o’clock Christmas Eve her fiancé presented her with a bag exactly the same as the one she had looked at and mentally identified herself with at ten o’clock the same morning. She had filled her mind with the thought of expectancy and released the whole thing to her deeper mind, which has the “know how” of accomplishment. She didn’t have the money to buy that bag, but now she knows where to find money and all the things she needs, and that is in the treasure house of eternity within her.” Another simple illustration is this: When you say, “I do not like mushrooms,” and the occasion subsequently comes that you are served mushrooms in sauces or salads, you will get indigestion because your subconscious mind says to you, “The boss (your conscious mind) does not like mushrooms.”
We reap what we sow.
Think of your subconscious mind as incredibly fertile soil that will grow any seed you plant in it. Your habitual thoughts and beliefs are seeds that are being constantly sown. Just as corn kernels produce corn and wheat seeds produce wheat, the contents of your thoughts will have an effect in your life. You will reap what you sow; this is a law.
Your conscious mind is like the gardener that tends to the soil. It’s your responsibility to be aware of how this process works, choosing wisely what reaches the inner garden — your subconscious. For most, our role as gardener has never been explained. By not knowing this role, we have allowed seeds of all types – good and bad – to enter our subconscious.
The subconscious doesn’t discriminate, judge, or censor. It will manifest success, abundance, and health just as easily as failure, ill health, and misfortune. Your subconscious accepts what is impressed upon it with feeling and repetition, whether these thoughts are positive or negative. It does not evaluate things like your conscious mind does. This is why it is so important to be aware of what you are thinking.

Once you understand that your subconscious will bring you what you need or desire, and you begin working daily to project thoughts and images of what you want, seemingly chance-events will start happening to you. To the untrained mind, synchronicity appears to be coincidence or luck, but it is neither. It is simply the operation of the forces you have set into motion with your thoughts. This powerful inner collaborator, working with your conscious mind, will bring to you the people and circumstances you require to achieve your goals.
